Note: The course was postponed from the 5th December due to the Cumbrian Floods.
As we are the planners again for the Marmot Dark Mountains we felt it relevant that we run a course for night navigation. But we also know in order to keep up for milage over winter its necessary to head out at night time & if like us you like to run on the fells at night, then being able to navigate well at night is an essential skill.
This course will give you the necessary confidence & skills to head out at night in the mountains.
Price: £100 per person.
We will run the course on a 1:5, tutor to student basis. This is so you get the necessary attention and you get the most out of the day/night.
The course will be based at the Ambleside YHA, giving great access to the surrounding fells & a warm place to retire to after we have finished with our day.
The YHA will provide food & accommodation. This is included in the price of the course and includes a packed lunch to take on the fell, a full evening meal (main & pudding), Friday night accommodation and a Saturday morning breakfast before you either head home or head out to spend a day practicing the skills learnt from the day before.
Ratio (Tutor to Client): 1:5 maximum
The course will be held on the 22nd January 2016
12:00 until 20:00
The course will be run in the South Eastern Lakes, at the Ambleside YHA. If you can't find the location, you might have trouble with navigation!
On a Night Navigation Skills Day/Night you will learn the following:
A Further understanding of Navigation for night time & zero visibility
Understand contours in detail, this is an essential skill.
What features to look for to help you navigate well. In this we include catchment features, aiming off, ticking off features etc
Safe navigation techniques which are the basis of good navigation
Learn how to re-locate at night
How to plan your route before heading out & how to adjust your plans on the move.
Confidence for navigating in the dark or poor daytime vision.
The course will entail:
Theory and conversation/questions until we have a break around 15:00 & a quick bite to eat.
After our break we will spend the rest of the time practicing what we have learnt in the theory and develop more skills on the mountains. We'll use the mountains around the Glenridding Valley as our practice ground, it is perfect night navigation terrain.
Please bring the following and make sure you have everything, although we have some spare kit, we don't have everything:
Harvey's 1:40'000, we will also supply some race maps to work on.
Full waterproof cover (Jacket and Pants), these must be taped seems, please call to discuss if your not sure.
Clothing suitable for the mountains & time of year - We will not really be running, so please account for that in your clothing selection (this should include a primaloft jacket, the weather could be snow, wind, rain or hail. It could possibly be all 4. We will be heading out no matter what the conditions, you will need plenty to stay warm & dry).
2 spare warm top, not cotton! Wool or synthetic will be fine
Suitable footwear for wet ground, preferably off road running shoes. We will not really be running though. Sealskin or Goretex socks will be a necessary. Waterproof boots would be great. We will not be running, we will be concentrating on navigation & getting it right!
2 x Hat, a balaclave & 3 x Gloves (1 light, 1 warm & 1 waterproof)
Hill-food & a flask for a warm drink.

UK deliveries are now FREE, for any value of order.
This service will be generally a 2 to 3 day delivery, once the item is produced & despatched (see below), unless you are living outside the mainland UK, in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland or Off Shore Islands, such as Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man & also Northern Ireland.
We do not offer next day delivery at present.
Please be aware that True Mountain products are made to order at present & therefore we quote a "5 day" despatch time scale. This is the time scale for the product to be ordered & then despatched, not the projected delivery timescale.
True Mountain are a small UK based company with quality at the top end of the scale. They are different from most other outdoor brands that we know about. True Mountain design and manufacture in the UK only, they source their materials from within the UK when possible & only source as far as the EU borders. By doing this, they produce some of the most ethical UK outdoor clothing & equipment that we know about. True Mountain also make to order. This means when you order a True Mountain (TM) product, we send the order through to TM in preston & their team of specialised machinists & cutters set to work on producing 'your' product. Inevitably this takes a little more time, but at least you know that the item you have ordered hasn't been made in a sweat box factory in another country.
We hope you will appreciate this fact & accept that your product might take a week or slightly more to arrive at your doorstep. Where ever possible we & True Mountain will try to make sure your products arrive as early as possible, but please allow a week from ordering to delivery.
We will always endeavour to keep you up to date with your order, but please feel free to email us to find out where on the production line your product is.
